Brief background of Civil Rights Movement Watch movie: Selma Brief daily discussion After the movie, please write at least a two paragraph response to the following: (DUE Monday, June 1) In his speech for the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, rapper and actor Common, said the following: "I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed black kid who maybe needed a hand, but was instead given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers slain in the line of duty. Selma has awakened my humanity. Selma is now." What does Common mean that "Selma is now"? Class discussion 4. Clean up for Earth Day! TUESDAY, April 21 REMEMBER: Your 1st draft of your persuasive essay is DUE TOMORROW! For every day that your first draft is late, you will lose a letter grade. Purple late slips will NOT work on this assignment. 1) Finish research for mini-debate. 2) When you and your partner are finished, meet with a partner pair who researched the opposing side. Take turns discussing the opposing sides to the argument: Was America right or wrong to drop the bombs on Japan? Every student (individually) should answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper: 1) What is your opponent's strongest argument? Why? 2) What is your opponent's weakest argument? Why? 3) What is your side's strongest argument? Why? 4) What is your side's weakest argument? Why? 5) Your opinion: Was the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan right or wrong or somewhere in-between? Explain in at least two paragraphs. These questions are due by the end of class on Wednesday! MONDAY, April 20 First, review powerpoint (provided below) Then, you will be working with alone or with a partner to collect research for a mini-debate. You will be given a side to research* and using the documents provided and outside research, you will collect at least 6 good arguments to support your side. *The side closest to the door are researching reasons to prove that America was WRONG to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the side of the room closest to the windows will be doing research to prove that America was RIGHT to drop the atomic bombs.* Once you are finished, you may either work on your persuasive essay OR work on the extra credit assignment below. This can be worth up to 5 extra credit points.
